Above all, a prayer dress should be comfortable and cover you completely without you having to keep adjusting it. To help you find the right style, we have summarised the most important points.
Two-piece or with a hood?
Two-piece prayer dresses consist of a long khimar with an integrated head covering and attached sleeves, plus a wide, floor-length skirt with an elasticated waistband. The advantage: you can slip both pieces over your everyday clothes in seconds, and your hair, neck and arms are securely covered.
Abayas with an attached hood are one-piece. They are suitable for prayer and at the same time for everyday wear or the way to the mosque, as you do not need a separate headscarf.
Which fabric suits you?
- Stretch fabric: soft, stretchy and crease-resistant – ideal for daily prayer and on the go, as the prayer dress hardly creases.
- Velvet: pleasantly warm, perfect for autumn and winter. Embossed patterns give the fabric an elegant sheen.
- Crinkle fabric: light and airy, with a fine texture – lovely for abayas that you also wear outside of prayer.
The right size
Most prayer dresses are offered in ONE SIZE. Thanks to the wide cut and stretchy fabric, they fit many sizes. Pay particular attention to the length: the skirt should reach the floor or your ankles so that you can move freely during prayer.
Care
Prayer dresses made of polyester stretch can usually be machine washed at 30 °C. Velvet is best washed inside out on a delicate cycle and left to air dry. Always follow the care label of your item.
