An abaya is versatile: for everyday wear, for prayer or for festive occasions. To make sure it fits well and is comfortable to wear, it is worth taking a look at the length, fabric and cut.
The right length
An abaya should reach your ankles or just above. That way it covers you, but you will not step on the hem when walking. As a rule of thumb: for a height of around 1,60 m, a total length of about 140–145 cm fits; for 1,70 m, rather 148–152 cm. The total length is measured from the shoulder to the hem.
What does one size mean?
Many abayas are offered in ONE SIZE. Thanks to the wide, flowing cut, they fit many dress sizes. Two measurements are particularly important:
- Total length – determines whether the abaya suits your height.
- Bust width (measured flat) – doubled, it gives the circumference. The larger the circumference, the looser the abaya falls.
Which fabric for which occasion?
- Viscose blends: soft, flowing and pleasant on the skin – ideal for everyday wear.
- Crinkle and dot textures: look lively and hide small creases – practical when you are out and about.
- Pleated: elegant, with beautiful movement – perfect for festive occasions.
Abaya with a hood
Abayas with an attached hood fully cover the hair and neck. This makes them suitable as a prayer dress too – quickly slipped on, without a separate headscarf.
